The concept behind “Strawberry-Moon-Girl” is to illustrate how what we find on and around our Mother Earth is textured, beautiful, and essential for our lives and that the same should be thought of for ourselves with our own textured skin.

Society often views acne as just a surface issue; however, the emotional impact of having acne runs very deep. The concept behind this illustration is to touch on the varying emotions the individual with acne feels during their battle with acne and to illustrate how acne may affect the individual on an emotional and mental level.

Having acne can often leave the individual to feel very isolated, yet it affects more than 90% of the world’s population at some point in their lifetime. We wanted to create an illustration that expressed how common acne is and that individuals are never alone.

Acne is not something anyone asks to have, yet many people suffer from it on a physical, mental, and emotional level. Acne has the potential to negatively influence one’s life if the individual is not careful. This illustration serves as a reminder that acne happens but losing yourself should not.

Our garden of positive affirmations serves as a reminder that growth comes from believing in oneself.

For many who suffer from anxiety and depression, we cope with our pain by putting others first, by being the comedian or social butterfly, or by portraying ourselves to be light and happy and in control; however, on the inside, we’re hurting and feel disconnected from our peers. We wanted to illustrate this contrast with “What they see” vs. “What I feel inside” to raise awareness that not everything you see on the surface of people is a reality with how they feel.

Our goal with this illustration is to communicate how society’s expectations of women often feel assigned to us at birth. We strive to remove female stereotypes and expectations, brought on by entertainment and beauty culture designed for profit, and allow for women to live more authentically.

Summer body ready means every body ready, and we wanted to make that understood in this illustration. Our message is clear: we are no longer accepting a narrative that is designed to make people feel ashamed of their bodies, insecure in a swimsuit, and self-conscious during an activity aimed at promoting relaxation, fun, and joy.

It’s hard to estimate the damage we are doing to ourselves when we treat ourselves unkindly. But what if you owed a dollar for every time you lacked compassion with yourself? Our key message is to treat oneself with compassion, especially in the hard times, as it is deeply important for mental health and happiness.

Comparison is corrosive and downplays all the good you truly have in life. This is a reminder that the grass is greener where you water it!
